Welcome to Justice Alliance in Design Education

The Center for Architecture and Design is a proud convener and participant of Justice Alliance for Design Education in Philadelphia (JADE-PHL). Our Design Education programming is an important piece of the overall goals of the JADE-PHL group. Our organization has aspirational goals to provide access to design education to every student in the Philadelphia School District, specifically targeting BIPOC communities – our participation in JADE-PHL is critical to help the students engaged in our programming to further their interest in design and to eventually diversify the pipeline to higher education in design and ultimately, in practice.

Lack of diversity and institutional racism in the design professions has been an issue for decades – and there have been countless programs designed to target this issue: scholarships, in-school and after-school programs, mentorship, summer programs. All of which have had varying degrees of success; but all were operating in silos from one another. JADE-PHL strives to breakdown those silos and leverage and collaborate with its members and students in an uncommon and unique approach focused on impact for BIPOC students.

Who We Are

We are a collective of educators, professionals, non-profit leaders, students, and administrators in the greater Philadelphia area.

We formed in 2019 as a long-overdue initiative to address institutional racism within architecture education.

Our activities build upon the centuries of work by Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of color to create a just society.

We aim to help create lasting, broad change from within our world of architecture education.

Our membership includes representation from 6 universities and 5 non-profits/trade associations.
